My Crazy Devotional Adventure

My crazy devotional adventure started with an answered prayer. Each year for 40 days, I challenge myself and deepen my faith. And so, I remember praying “God, what do you want me to give up for the next 40 days.” Maybe you have prayed this too?

(Image: Unsplash)

Expecting the usual coffee, sugar, or food answer… I was frustrated when my heart tugged with an answer I did not like. It felt like the answer was to read daily devotionals. Then I prayed for discernment on which devotional to read, and I did not like the answer: “Ten per day.”

The rebellious child inside my heart immediately disagreed. And so, I tried to negotiate myself out of this crazy adventure. I wanted a traditional 40 day fast and not something weird. But the more I wanted to fast from sugar or bread, the stronger the conviction was to read devotional books,

Read 10 Devotions a Day For the Next 40 Days

My threshold for boredom and attention to busyness were bookends of complaint. These thoughts were persistent. Yet sitting in the quiet place of my prayer room, it was not negotiable. I knew I would now read a total of 400 devotions. Ugh.

After the first week, I noticed the words in these ten books were blurring together. They were not feeding my soul or guiding my day. Although I selected different authors and themes, my reading became routine. Boring.

The remedy was to split my books into two stacks of five, then read five in the morning and five more in the evening. It was a bit easier. But I wrestled with reasoning “why” I was on this crazy adventure.

After my 40 days were complete, I archived the ten devotional books back onto my bookshelf. It was a strange calling, and yet I faithfully obeyed.

“This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.” -Jeremiah 30:2 NIV

Now, years later, I am blissfully writing my own devotional books. Perhaps, God had a plan and a purpose.

He was teaching me sentence structure, format, emotion, and message. What an amazing Father, to know my every need.

Be Blessed!

Jesus Our Perfect Hope 365 Devotional by Charles Stanley

Charles Stanley writes beautiful books. His 365 devotional book Jesus Our Perfect Hope is a wonderful book to read. In fact, I enjoyed this so much that I bought 40 copies of the devotional book and gave one to each of my volunteers at the Bible Café™ Ministry. It’s a prefect keepsake book.

(image: unsplash)

Here’s 3 reasons why I enjoy reading (and gifting) this devotional book.

First, Jesus Our Perfect Hope 365 Devotional by Charles Stanley is visually attractive. The outside cover is a soft imitation leather in a warm coffee color. It looks great sitting on the bedside table. Or next to a filled latte mug! The inside pages are visually attractive too. A warm bled of colors highlight quote boxes and daily words to ponder. I like feasting my eyes and heart on these daily truths. And, the book has a bookmark ribbon, which is very convenient and thoughtful for any reader.

Second, the book is rich in wisdom. After years of pastoring and studying the Scriptures, Charles Stanley has a classic voice. He’ll be remembered for his truth-telling stories, even when we don’t like them. He’ll be remembered for his unwavering devotional to God. These are evident in his literature writings, making this devotional book a timeless classic.

Third, this author is not shy about calling for godly repentance and obedience. Refreshing in a modern world. While I enjoy reading modern theologians, pastors, and authors too, sometimes its refreshment to go back to classics. Like Charles Surgeon. Or Charles Stanley.

Charles Stanley Quotes

“My hope is in Jesus because He lifts me up and transforms my life.” – Charles Stanley

“My hope is in Jesus because He satisfies my soul.” – Charles Stanley

Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. (John 15:2 NKJV)

You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. (John 15:3-4 NLT)

He will settle disputes among the nations and provide arbitration for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not take up the sword against nation, and they will never again train for war. (Isaiah 2:4 CSB)

I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it. (Isaiah 5:6 NIV)

He will settle disputes among many peoples and provide arbitration for strong nations that are far away. They will beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not take up the sword against nation, and they will never again train for war. (Micah 4:3 CSB)

Bible Verses About Pruning Weeds

They speak mere words, taking false oaths while making covenants. So lawsuits break out like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field. (Hosea 10:4 CSB)

But while people were sleeping, his enemy came, sowed weeds among the wheat, and left. (Matthew 13:25 CSB)

“‘No,’ he said. ‘When you pull up the weeds, you might also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At harvest time I’ll tell the reapers: Gather the weeds first and tie them in bundles to burn them, but collect the wheat in my barn.’” (Matthew 13:29-30 CSB)

The field is the world; and the good seed—these are the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one. (Matthew 13:38 CSB)

Therefore, just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. (Matthew 13:40 CSB)

Charles Spurgeon Sermons and Study Bible

I’ve been listening to Charles Spurgeon’s sermons and reading his published works. I found his books on Amazon, his spoken sermons on Spotify, and written sermons on the internet. The man is quite fascinating and so is the CSB Spurgeon Study Bible! I remind myself of the original CONTEXT of his teachings. What was happening in the world? Where was he preaching? How was his audience responding? These are the important reminders when I study a historical theologian such as Charles Spurgeon.

I enjoy seeing you discover the Bible and helping you apply the Bible to your life. The CSB Spurgeon Study Bible is an opportunity for me to share my passion with you. 2022 Summer Bible Study

We’re excited to begin another summer of FREE study at the Bible Cafe™. We’re expecting more than 2,000 participants for the free Revelation Bible study. As a reminder, you will want the book Revelation: The Smart Guide to the Bible by Daymond Duck. Our Introduction week begins the week of July 11, 2022, where you’ll meet your leaders and make small group friends. Grab a book and show up for a free virtual small group at the Bible Cafe™- everyone is welcome!

(Image: Unsplash)

With so many women participating in the 2022 summer Bible study, we know you’ll have many questions. So here’s a summary of the most common questions we receive before starting  an online Bible study:

2022 Summer Bible Study with Virtual Small Groups

What if my book has not arrived yet?
You can download the book in Kindle format and get instant access. No waiting for a delivery truck.

What should I be reading in the book?
Each week you’ll read three easy chapters.

What Bible translation should I use?
If you look at the first inside page of your study book, with copyright information, you’ll see that the author is using the New King James Version (NKJV) for this study. Use any Bible you prefer. We recommend using an online Bible app, such as or if you’d like to use the same translation as the book author, or examine a passage in multiple translations (NIV, ESV, NLT, for example).

Do we need to answer the questions each week? Where do I find them?

We have prepared ten discussion questions for each small group conversation. Christine Abraham will send you these questions by email when you REGISTER for updates.

When and where do the small groups meet?
To see the schedule of small groups, register for this study. We will send you the discussion schedule by email. FREE groups are meeting on Facebook- in a private group.

Who is my small group leader?

She will introduce herself to the group as soon as all the women have joined the study. You will have a leader and a co-leader, both are there to facilitate the discussion and pray for you.

Can I attend more than one small group?

Yes, you can attend as many small groups as you like. For example, if you miss your regular group on Tuesday, feel free to attend another group during the week so you will not fall behind.

2022 Summer Bible Study

What time and where do we meet?
We meet many times during the week- mornings, afternoons, and evenings.

Can my friends see what I post in the Facebook group?
The settings for the Facebook group are private. The comments will appear in your timeline and only you will see them. Remember though, if you have a friend in the same Facebook group, she will see what you

Do I need to participate in the group discussions?
It is beneficial to your study and spiritual growth when you participate. The enemy of God will convince you that your words don’t matter. We know from leading several online Bible studies that women who participate in group discussions are more likely to finish their studies. And so, the women who do not participate in the small groups are most likely to drop out and not complete the study.

Do I need the book to participate?
Yes, it is recommended for this study. Our discussions are based on the weekly reading assignment from Revelation: The Smart Guide to the Bible

What if I need to go on vacation during this study?
Bring your book and Bible with you.

What if I fall behind in my reading?
Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you get back on track. Don’t quit just because you are behind or feel disappointed in yourself. Reach out to your small group for support and encouragement. They will cheer you on, all the way to the finish line!

What if I have spiritual warfare while trying to do this Bible study?
You will have spiritual warfare, it’s almost guaranteed. As you draw closer to the LORD, Satan will do his best to put a wedge between you and your study. We know that Scripture is armor against the enemy…so he will distract, discourage and deceive you during this study. We encourage you to pray with your small groups and ask others to intercede. Post a prayer request in our group. We have a designated team of women who will be praying for you.

Welcome to online Bible study!
