Bible Verses About Hypocrites help us understand how we can be less like the world, and more like Jesus. When you look at Bible verses about hypocrites you will have a better understanding. But first, lets define the word hypocrite. In modern language this means a person who indulges in hypocrisy. We see in the modern dictionary that hypocrisy is the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform. This view helps us understand a modern application.

And now, lets look at the Bible meaning for hypocrite. This word appears 31 times in the King James Version. Yet when I was growing up in religious schools, I remember hearing this ALL the time. We used this word to correct one another when someone’s behavior did not align with our religious beliefs.
When we look at Job 13:16, the Hebrew word (H2611) means godless, profane, irreligious. That’s a bit different from our modern understanding. As we move into the New Testament, Luke 6:42 Greek (G5273) means an actor under an assumed character (stage-player). Now that makes more sense than our modern definition.
Bible Verses About Hypocrites
I do not sit with the deceitful, nor do I associate with hypocrites. (Psalm 26:4 NIV)
“Because of this, I will once again astound these hypocrites with amazing wonders. The wisdom of the wise will pass away, and the intelligence of the intelligent will disappear.” (Isaiah 29:14 NLT)
“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” (Matthew 6:2 NIV)
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.” (Matthew 6:16 NIV)
You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:5 NIV)
But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?” (Matthew 22:18 NIV)
“What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.” (Matthew 23:13 NLT)
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.” (Matthew 23:25-26 NIV)
He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” (Mark 7:6 NIV)
He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him. (Job 13:16 KJV)
“How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” (Luke 6:42 NIV)
Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye. (Luke 6:42 KJV)
But Paul said to him, “God will slap you, you corrupt hypocrite! What kind of judge are you to break the law yourself by ordering me struck like that?” (Acts 23:3 NLT)
Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. (1 Timothy 4:1-2 NLT)
